I came across a photo of this quilt that Mom made in 2010 and decided that I’d like to eventually make one too. It’s one that I designed/drafted for her at the time but who knows where those instructions are now so I’ll write out some brief notes here.

First I drew it up in my TouchDraw app. Quilt will measure about 57 x 71

Logs would be cut 2 inches and blocks would finish at 10.5 inches (11 inches with seam allowances). I’ll use the Eleanor Burns way of making log cabin blocks and sew and then trim rather than cutting all the logs to a specific size. The center square will be cut 2 inches square and I will cut those first white squares on either side of it 2 inches too.

To make extra space for the hearts, I’m going to add a strip that is cut 3.5 inches (it will finish at 3 inches and be the same width as two of the logs. I will sew 5 blocks in a vertical row and then add the strip on the right side of the row. I will do this with the first 3 rows, the final row of blocks will not have a strip sewn to it.

I’ll cut the hearts using my Accuquilt GO die but you can find a heart applique online and size it to your quilt. Use whatever method of appliqué that you like. I’ll fuse my hearts and then stitch them with a blanket stitch … probably by hand but we’ll see. Due to the construction of the top you won’t be able to stitch them on the blocks before sewing them together so I’d suggest assembling the top in two halves, stitch those hearts and then sew the halves together and stitch the last row of hearts in the center.
My outer border will be cut 4.5 inches.
