Chevron Rail Fence

My initial drawing of this quilt might make you a bit dizzy but let’s make this scrappy and it won’t!

Quilt size 60 x 84

Block size 12 inches finished ( 12.5 with seam allowances)

Blocks are made from 2.5 inch strips and I used Fat Quarters to get the most of my fabric, I’m making two blocks in each combination.

Cut (5) 2.5 inch strips from the long side of your fat quarter – mine vary from about 21 to 22 inches long. After sewing a light strip to a red or blue strip, subcut It into 4.5 inch sections. I get 4 sections from each strip and I need 9 sections for each block so 5 strips will give you the 18 you need for two blocks plus 2 extra.

Please note, if your seam allowance tends to be a bit generous, you can measure the width of your first strip set and use that measurement rather than 4.5 for your subcut sections. Just be consistent throughout the quilt. In this case, my strip set does measure 4.5 so that’s the measurement I’m using for my quilt.

PLEASE NOTE – the red and blue blocks are laid out differently!!!

For this quilt you need to make 18 RED blocks – Block A

And 17 BLUE blocks – BLOCK B

Here are the 9 sections of one of my Block A’s ready to sew. Assemble it just like you would a 9 patch – sewing the block sections across in rows and then sewing the rows together.

Press the seams in your strip sets to the red or blue fabric and press the seams In both Block A and B toward the vertical sections and everything will nestle together.

Those last two seams in Block A should be pressed UP and in Block B, press them DOWN.

Lay out 5 blocks across and 7 blocks down starting with a red block. Here are my first 4 blocks on the design wall.

And just because I hate to waste fabric, I’m cutting 2.5 inch sections from those leftover bits of my strip sets and I will make them into a doll quilt!

Thanks for the directions, Mary! I am so excited to start this quilt with some RWB strips I’ve got in my stash. Is too hot outside, this is a good day to be sewing.

I just re-ran across this & wanted to tell you how much I love it! I have a RWB jelly roll I was at a loss as to how to use & this is the perfect pattern for it. Yay… one more QOV! Thank you for sharing this with us!
