HeartStrings is collecting RWB HeartStrings blocks between Memorial Day and July 4th 2008 to make quilts for wounded soldiers.  The following are brief instructions for constructing the blocks. For the mailing address to send RWB HeartStrings blocks, please email me at mmcjohnson@gmail.com

Blocks are pieced on a 10 inch muslin foundation with a center BLUE string that is cut 2 inches.

Additional strings should be Red/White/Blue. The *whites* can be white, cream, beige, or even tan with or without red or blue prints. Place any width strip/string (up to 3 inches wide) face down and sew with a quarter inch seam. Pinning is not necessary but can be done as shown below if desired. An accurate quarter inch seam is not crucial either.

Iron strip at this point and between each additional strip to prevent tucks. I make my blocks in sets of 4-6 so I’m adding multiple strips before getting up to iron. At this point, you can usually add strips to both sides of the block before ironing also.

Continue adding strips or strings until the foundation is covered.

Use wider strips or larger triangle pieces on the corners to avoid having tiny pieces in the corners once the block is trimmed.

Trim block to 9.5 inches. For instructions on squaring up HeartStrings blocks please click this link.
